Bangalore, Mar 1: The Karnataka government has extended partying hours in Bangalore by allowing bars and restaurants to remain open till 1am. While restaurants and coffee shops can now remain open till 1am, bars and pubs are allowed to operate till 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The earlier cut-off time of 11pm was not popular among the city's party-goers and the move is being seen as the Congress government's bid to woo young voters ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The issue had earlier figured in the election manifestoes of many parties during assembly polls in the state six months ago.
The extension was announced by Karnataka home minister KJ George on Saturday, TV channels reported. The revised timings will initially be in place for three months on an experimental basis.
"On behalf of citizens I commend the Govt of Ktka especially CM n Home Min for extending closing hours to 1 am. n nightlife on weekends (sic)," entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar Shaw tweeted.
Bangalore police had earlier said it did not have ample force to keep an eye on the streets in the night.
