Mangaluru, Mar 11: The Karnataka government has proposed to set up nine health kiosks under the limits of Mangaluru City Corporation and Ullal City Municipal Council with the intention of making the health services accessible to the working class.
On Saturday demonstration of the a free health kiosk was held near Kadri park in the city. Daily wage workers, drivers and street vendors among others were the beneficiaries.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister U T Khader, who also underwent a small check-up in the kiosk, said that such kiosks will come up in Jeppinamogaru, Saripalla, Kudroli, Meenakaliya and Krishnapura in MCC and near Thokkottu bus stand, Olapete, Kotepura and Chembugudde in Ullal CMC.
Mr. Khader said these kiosks made of pre-fabricated aluminum sheets are being set up using funds available under the National Urban Health Mission. The kiosks will be in addition to 10 Urban Health Centres that are already working. The kiosks will be located in areas that are far away from the UHCs.
A nurse and a laboratory technician will be available for a couple of hours in the morning and evening at the kiosk to provide services such as checking blood pressure, immunisation, malaria testing and urine examination for construction labourers and other working personnel. A doctor would visit the kiosk every fortnight. Mr. Khader said each of the kiosk will cost Rs. 4.5 lakh. He said these kioks would be operational in a week’s time.
