Mangaluru, Jul 23: A team of officials from the departments of Mines and Geology, Revenue and Police seized nine trucks at two different locations in Mangaluru taluk for allegedly involving in illegal sand transportation.

The trucks were handed over to the jurisdictional Bajpe police, who released them on collecting Rs. 60,000 as penalty. Senior geologist Nagendrappa, officials including Somashekhara Murthy, Mahadevappa and driver Channappa participated in the drive.
Prior to this, the officials seized four trucks near Hoigebazar in the southern part of the city close to Nethravati river.
Officials said the trucks were parked to get sand loads from the river banks. The seized trucks have been handed over to the jurisdictional police.
The Dakshina Kannada district administration has banned sand excavation from river beds in the coastal regulation zone area during the monsoon — between June and August.
As a result, construction activity in the district has almost come to a standstill and frequent attempts are being made to transport sand within as well as outside the district.
