Mangalore, Apr 10: Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer (DEO) A B Ibrahim said that the district administration had issued a notice to BJP star campaigner Ananth Kumar and local LS candidate Nalin Kumar Kateel on Thursday, for violating the model code of conduct during an interaction programme with the students of NITK at Suratkal.

Addressing mediapersons at a press conference here on Thursday, he said that the complaint was filed suo moto ' by the district administration. The director of NITK has also been asked to hand over an explanation in this regard. Political parties have been directed to inform the district administration about the schedule of programmes/events attended by star campaigners prior to their visit in the district, he said.

Hourly tally of votes to be displayed

For the first time on the day of polling, hourly tally of votes will be displayed on a board in each of 1766 polling stations in the district. This is a new rule incorporated by the district administration in Dakshina Kannada, he said.

He said that all the polling stations would have basic facilities such as drinking water, toilets, and electricity for polling agents, staff and voters and a ramp for the physically disabled.

Rahul Gandhi rally expenditure added to Poojary 's campaigning expenses

On the occasion, the expenditure observer informed that the total expenditure incurred by Congress party during star campaigner Rahul Gandhi 's rally in Mangalore was Rs 6.98 lakhs, and the amount would be included under the local Congress candidate B Janardhan Poojary 's expenditure, since the political dignitaries on the stage had appealed for votes from the audience in the name of the candidate. There were 12 VIP seats during the rally and 10,000 plastic chairs for party members and audience, he said.

Webcasting on polling day

On the polling day, webcasting will be facilitated in 367 polling stations in the district on an experimental basis. Focus will be more in naxal-affected regions. Close to 448 students from 17 engineering colleges, including NITK, will participate to facilitate webcasting, informed the DEO.

Leaflets to be circulated all over DK

Mr Ibrahim also said that leaflets in Kannada and English appealing to voters to exercise their franchise would be circulated by BLOs in over 5 lakh homes in the district to increase voter participation.

He said that the political parties had been advised to engage in constructive campaigning instead of negative campaigning and targeting opponents with the intention of trying to create confusion among voters.

Like in the previous polls, candidates will have the opportunity of setting up candidate booths 100 metres away from the polling station, he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
