On Wednesday, two under trials reportedly identifying themselves with underworld dons Madoor Isbu and Rasheed Malabari had resorted to fighting it out in the jail premises along with their gangs on Wednesday, during the course of which one under trials Ilyas suffered minor injuries.
DIG Hithendra paid a visit to Mangalore jail on Thursday, following this episode.
It may be recalled that on November 1, 2012, the inmates of Mangalore jail were shifted to new premises as the episodes of fights had become frequent in the old jail premises. Further the inmates were also possessing mobile, ganja and even weapons in the jail. With the aim of keeping a closer vigil on the movement of the inmates they were shifted to the new, bigger premises but even this jail has failed to prevent outbreak of such fights among the inmates.
No CCTVs
Though provisions have been made to install CCTV cameras in the jail, the cameras are yet to be in place. Though video conferencing facility is available, it has not been put to use because the Court is yet to shift to its new premises. However, video conferencing has been going on between the jail and other Courts, due to which the inmates are not being taken to the other Courts for the hearing.
The DIG also held a meeting with District Judge B V Prakash and urged that video conferencing facility must be adopted in the new Court building.
He also sought permission to install CCTVs in the jail.
