Bengaluru, Apr 11: If the Mines and Geology department gets it right, then purchase of sand will no longer be a gruelling and expensive affair, especially for Bengalureans, who end up paying exorbitant rates.

Truckers are known to jack up rates constantly. For instance, if a trucker purchases one load of sand for Rs 5,500 to Rs 6,000 (Rs 450 to Rs 800 per cubic metre) from a government yard, he sells it at Rs 45,000 to Rs 50,000 in Bengaluru.
Given the demand for sand, the reserves of which are fast depleting in Karnataka, the customer is not even in a situation to negotiate with the truck owner who ends up calling the shots. For, there are no government depots or registered agencies to fix the rates or streamline the process.
Tushar Girinath, secretary, Commerce and Industries (Mines, SSI, Textiles), told Deccan Herald that the Mines and Geology Department had finalised the module, and that it was awaiting the approval of the e-governance department for the development of the software and installation of gadgets at all the yards. “We are hoping to get the approval within 10 to 15 days. The entire system might take close to a year to start functioning effectively, because of the logistics involved,” he added.
Once the online system is introduced, the customer will get to choose the yard he wants to purchase sand from, and book the quantity required. The department will also put up the rates. If the customer wants the sand to be transported, then he can book for transportation, too, on the same website. The officer said the department would be hiring only registered trucks for this purpose. In case the customer wants to use his own transportation, then that vehicle, too, has to be registered with the department.
Already, Andhra Pradesh has introduced this system, where sand is in fact brought to the doorstep of the customer, after he/she books for it online (www.sandbhyshg. ap.gov.in). The Andhra government has handed over the sale of sand to women-run self-help groups in villages. Kerala is also experimenting with the online module.
