Mangaluru, Jun 12: With an apparent vision of assisting kidney patients in Dakshina Kananda and creating awareness among them a new association is being formed in the district. Announcing this at a press conference here on Friday, Umar U H, general secretary, reception committee, kidney health campaign, said that on the same occasion an interaction with Dr Vivek Pathak, HOD, Nephrology, Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital, Coimbatore, will also be organized. Dr Pathak is known for his remarkable saga of steroid free kidney transplantation.
U K Monu, Chairman, Kanachur Hospital and Research Centre, Deralakatte, Sudesh Kumar, President, Kanara Builders Association, B M Shareef, Chairman, White Stone Foundation, Eric C Lobo, Chairman, St Ann’s Group of Institutions, Mangaluru and M Rizwan Bappanad, Chairman, Bappanad Foundation will be the chief guests, while Dr Mohammed Saleem, Chairman, Mangalore Nephro-Urology Charitable Trust will president over.
Addressing media persons, Dr Saleem said that even though there are a large number of kidney patients in Dhakshina Kannada no sufficient measures have been taken so far by the government for their treatment and guidance.
“The patients are not educated enough regarding the treatments and facilities available in the modern world to counter the kidney related ailments. The new association will try to bring all the kidney patients in the district under one platform and work as a messenger of awareness and information,” he said.
Dr Saleem opined that the government has failed miserably to create proper awareness among the common people concerning the importance of Kidney donation. “Dialysis is not a permanent solution for the kidney failure. Kidney transplantation is the best way to get rid of the kidney related health issues. But, transplantation becomes a herculean task as the people are hardly ready to donate the kidney. Even if there are donors, the district lacks the facilities for storage. They have to move to Bangaluru or neighbouring states.”
He said that his Association demands the government to set up necessary facilities in Dhakshina Kannada to facilitate kidney donation. “The Association strive to establish coordination among the kidney patients and the donors,” he added.
Representatives of the Association Divakar Shetty, Mallikarjuna and Arun Raskunha were present in the press conference.
