Kaup, Aug 23: When officials from the Department of Mines and Geology arrived at Padoor in Udupi taluk on Thursday to conduct a survey with a view of setting up a stone crusher unit in the area, they were forced to return from the place by the villagers who did not allow them to conduct the survey.
Earlier, huge boulders had accumulated in Padoor which were found during the time when a crude oil storage unit had been set up in the same region. Two months ago, Udupi district deputy commissioner had declared two areas of Padoor in Majoor village as safe zones to set up a stone crusher unit to crush the boulders.
However, when the officials from the department arrived to conduct a survey in Padoor on Thursday, there were met with strong resistance by the residents of the village who eventually forced them to return without conducting a survey.
A tense situation prevailed for a while, when heated words were exchanged between the officials and the villagers who were reluctant on allowing the officials to conduct a survey.
The villagers pointed out that one of the areas declared as safe zone for the stone crusher unit was surrounded by houses, two mosques, a church and a school. The official from Department of Mines and Geology agreed to submit a report to the deputy commissioner pointing out these factors and also mentioning the villagers' resistance to the proposal of setting up a stone crusher unit.
The officials thereafter returned from the village.
