Mangaluru, Sep 13: In a move to protect the interests of consumers who order products online, the department of consumer affairs is in the process of streamlining the entire customer grievances redressal set up, said UT Khader, minister for food, civil supplies and consumer affairs.
Speaking to media persons in the city, the minister said that many online consumers feel cheated with either the quality or quantity of product they order. However, at present they are not sure whom to approach in case of product mismatch or when one receives a product that is inferior in quality or damaged. “Rules will be framed to deal with it,” he said.
Weighing machines at hyper marts
Mr Khader said that the Department of Legal Metrology has so far identified about 450 super and hyper marts where weighing machines will be installed to enable consumers to check the weight of the products bought from there.
He said that there are more than 2,000 mass retail vending points in Karnataka including 900 super and hyper marts. He said department has already had one round of talks with the managements of such marts to finalise the nitty-gritty of the proposal.
“We are also in touch with the departments of horticulture and agriculture to ensure that similar facilities are provided in APMC yards to ensure that farmers are not cheated,” he added.
App-based cabs
The Minister also said the department was in the process of framing rules to bring services of online and app-based cabs under its purview. “With this measure, we intend to ensure even these aggregators comply with the rules on fare applicable to autorickshaws and taxis…to protect consumers from surge pricing and arbitrarily charges,” Mr. Khader said.
