Mangaluru, Dec 11: With intensified security arrangements and heavy vehicle-checking by police in the city limits on Thursday, citizens grew apprehensive over the possibilities of violence escalating in the city in view of several untoward incidents over the past few days.
False rumours added to the anxiety of city-goers over violence intensifying due to unrest already present in the coastal city. When it was confirmed that the heavy presence of police personnel was due to ongoing mock drill people heaved a sigh of relief.
The drill was part of Sagar Kavach, a multi enforcement agency operation involving Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Coastal Security Police of Karnataka State police and the local police units to examine their preparedness and alertness in securing the state's coastal belt during emergencies such as high-level terrorist or naxal attacks.
As part of the drill security and scrutiny were increased at various parts of the city including international airport, railway stations, bus stand and the public utility roads in Mangaluru city.
The operations which commenced yesterday morning will conclude on Thursday evening. The drill led to major traffic jams at several busy places in and around the city during the peak hour.
Meanwhile, the police personnel under Mangaluru City Police commissionerate have expressed displeasure over conducting additional operations in the backdrop of recent untoward incidents and unrest in few parts of the city.
Police personnel say that it was difficult to perform such operations while keeping aside pressing duties such as tackling crime, directing movement of traffic, security watch and court appearances.
