Mangalore, Apr 16: A couple of days after the first cadaveric organ donation took place in Dakshina Kannada, Medical Director of A J Hospital and Research Centre Dr Prashanth Marla said that the transplantation that was made possible by creating a “green corridor” for the swift transportation of the harvested organ of an accident victim from Mangaluru to Bengaluru, had been successful and thanked the donor’s family and the district administration for their cooperation for the noble cause.

Speaking at a media conference here on Thursday, Dr Marla said that following the transplantation of the liver of an accident victim from Mangaluru, the recipient of the donated organ was recuperating well in Bengaluru.
It can be recalled that for the first time, a vital human organ was transported from Mangaluru to Bengaluru on Monday. The donor was a 24-year-old accident victim Jeevan Vijay Fernandez who was declared brain dead at the A J Hospital. Following the consent of family members, the liver belonging to Jeevan was transported to BGS Global Hospital in Bengaluru where a patient was waiting to receive it.
Two specialists from Bengaluru along with two surgeons from A J Hospital successfully removed the liver from Jeevan and assisted in transporting it within an hour to the hospital in Bengaluru.
Dr Marla said that whenever a brain-dead patient was willing for donation, the same would be informed to the zonal coordination committee in the state. They chalk up the necessary legal requirements, inform the recipients and their hospitals, arrange for the retrieval team, transport the organ and facilitate the transplantation, he said, thanking the efforts of the district administration and police force in creating the traffic-free “green corridor” for the swift transportation of the organ.
He added that there were no hassles during transportation through the traffic-free corridor.
On asked, he replied that the medical expenses of Jeevan’s treatment and removal of organs had been waived off on a humanitarian basis.
