Udupi, Aug 6: A total of 37,507 children are out of school in Udupi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Shivamogga and Koppal districts of Karnataka, according to Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

Addressing media persons here, Vanitha Thorvi, a member of the Commission, said 217 children in Udupi, 13,087 children in Vijayapura, 5,409 children in Bagalkot, 9,794 children in Koppal and 9,000 in Shivamogga and districts are out of portals of the schools.
She said the initiative taken up by the commission to bring back all dropouts back to schools under the Shale Kade Nanna Nade' programme has brought a hope.
She said the children all over the state would be brought to the mainstream of education by adopting the measures in a phase-wise manner.
Thorvi said a majority of students are out of schools due to child labour and child marriage.
Migration of their parents from one place to another in search of jobs is another cause, she added.
She said the commission aims at introducing skill-based programmes to make the children aged between 16 and 18 years self-reliant.
Thorvi said 2,500 children have not been traced in Bagalkot, Bijapur and Koppal districts. Around 74 kids are missing from slums in these three districts. This shows rampant human trafficking in the region, she added.
Referring to Udupi district, she said it has 217 dropouts, who are not the aboriginals. NGOs should come forward to take up the responsibility of the rehabilitation of the children who are deprived of education, she noted.
She stressed on the need for counseling, education and moral guidance. She expressed anguish over the lack of departmental support to the commission's attempt to rehabilitate the dropouts. Child beggars can be stopped from begging if they are tracked constantly and rehabilitated, she remarked.
