Mangaluru, Jun 28: For many people iftar without samosa would be unsavoury like a curry without salt and chilly. For some others it is a great relaxation in the times of price hike as samosa is not so expensive.

Mohammed Shereef, a Mangaluru resident says, “the first food item that comes to my mind when I think of Ramadan is nothing but samosa. During iftar a dining table without samosa is quite unimaginable. Just like Shereef many others have similar opinion to share. “Samosa is so much a snack of common man,” opines Mustafa Kamal an elderly man from Ullal, who is a regular customer at a samosa stall near State Bank in Mangaluru.
Samosa has been a popular iftar snacks among all walks of life for many years and thus it opens up the possibility of a seasoned market with considerable profit. As the holy month commenced two weeks ago, many bakeries, eateries and restaurants in the coastal city have started attracting the consumers with variety of samosas.
Abdul Rasheed, the owner of a restaurant in Kankanady says “though we are preparing more snack foods, samosa has been the most sold snack during Ramadan. Hence, apart from the veg samoosas we have started preparing chicken, mutton, and beef samoosas with different spices. Expecting more sales in the last fifteen days of Ramadan we have recruited additional staff to meet the demand of the costumers,” he added.
Devadas, who runs a special samosa stall near State Bank only during Ramadan, says around 3,000 samosas are sold every day, and in the last 10 days it will increase up to 5,000. “With these sales we can manage to meet our extra needs.” As per his estimation, around one lakh samosas are sold every day by around 100 sellers in Mangaluru.
