Mangalore, May 21: An elderly woman and a teenage boy were washed away by strong currents while three others were rescued at Mogaveerpatna beach in Ullal on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Mehrunnisa (60) and Mushtaq (14), natives of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. While Mehrunnisa died after being rescued from the tides, Mushtaq is still missing.
Three others identified as Shakila Banu, Ghausunnisa and Munni-all aged between 20 and 35 years-had also been washed away by the high tides. However they were rescued by the localites.
Around two dozens of people belonging to four families hailing from Andhra Pradesh had undertaken a pilgrimage to Syed Madani Dargah of Ullal to fulfill a vow. After offering special prayers at Dargah all the family members went to Mogaveerapatna to spend some time in the beach and enjoy the sun set seen.
According to local sources a few among them had sat on the sands while few others ventured into the water. All of a sudden a massive wave swept over them engulfing at least five among them.
Immediately responding to the screams of family members, localites and beach goers plunged into the water and managed to rescue four among them. However, one of the rescued women –Mehrunnisa– breathed her last within a few minutes.
Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khadar rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation.
