
Mangalore, Apr 15: To ensure peaceful polling in the western range of Karnataka police spread over four districts and comprising three Lok Sabha constituencies of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi-Chikmagalur and Uttara Kannada, a total of 481 police officials of the ranks of superintendent of police to assistant sub-inspector had been deputed for polling duty, along with 4,053 police personnel including head constables, home guards, forest department staff and civil defence staff.
In-charge IGP (Western Range) and Mangalore city police commissioner R Hithendra said that the local police force had been strengthened with the presence of 1,400 central paramilitary forces and Karnataka State Reserve Police personnel. In addition, Anti Naxal Force personnel will involve in combing operations in and around naxal-affected areas, he said.
Voting will be held in 4,604 polling stations in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Chikmagalur districts, which include 158 in naxal-affected areas, 417 hyper-sensitive and 1279 sensitive booths, he said.
849 booths in Mangalore Commissionerate limits
In the Mangalore Commissionerate limits, there are a total of 849 polling booths, out of which 85 are hyper-sensitive booths, 157 are sensitive booths and 607 are general booths. The 849 booths will be divided into 52 sectors, which will be monitored by 52 sector mobiles. A total of 7,89,659 voters are set to vote on polling day, he said, adding that a total of 19 checkposts would be set up in the city as part of security arrangements.
954 booths in DK district limits
DK Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa said that there were a total of 954 polling booths in his limits, out of which 62 booths were in naxal-affected areas, 112 booths were hyper-sensitive and 227 booths were sensitive. A total of 837 police personnel would be deputed for polling duty in the district, he said, adding that police had taken steps to ensure that CPMF deputed in his limits had advantage of route familiarisation.
He said that combing operations were being conducted around polling booths in such areas by the Anti-Naxal Force to ensure safety of voters. Close to 111 sector mobiles will be working day-and-night in urban and rural areas in the district to ensure law and order during the polling process. A total of 36 new CCTV cameras have been installed in 15 places for surveillance during polling, he said.
