Mangaluru, Apr 8: Family members of Ahmed Qureshi, who is beating treated at a private hospital in Mangaluru after allegedly tortured by the police, have claimed that the City Crime Brach had tried to implicate him in the unsolved Karthik Raj murder case. BJP and other saffron groups have staged several protests in last few months to exert pressure on the police to nab the culprits in the murder case of Karthik Raj, who was hacked to death on October 22, 2016 by unknown miscreants near Konaje on the outskirts of the city. However, police have made no headway in the case so far.

Speaking media persons, Qureshi’s elder brother Mohammed Nishad, said on Saturday that on March 27 police had forced Qureshi to give a false statement before the magistrate about multiple injuries on his body. Qureshi, who had stated before the magistrate that he had sustained injuries in a road accident two days ago, later revealed that police had asked him to lie and had threatened him to implicate in Karthik Raj murder case and kill him in a fake encounter if he reveals the fact that he was cruelly tortured in the custody.
Expressing shock over the statements given to media by the senior police officers, Nishad said that the cops are trying to mislead the people through a pack of lies and cover up the case of custodial torture. “Police had picked up Qureshi on March 21 and tortured him in the illegal confinement until formally announcing his arrest on March 26. Constant physical torture including electric shocks has resulted in failure of one of his kidneys. Now, everyone knows this fact. However, the police are still trying to convince the world that they did not ill-treat him,” he lamented.
Reiterating that his brother is innocent and did not indulge in any kind of criminal activities, Nishad urged the elected representatives from Dakshina Kannada and state government to give justice to his brother and take action against CCB inspector Sunil Naik, sub-inspector Shyam Sundar and others for the physical torture. He also demanded compensation to Qureshi, who, according to him, lost everything in life because of the police excessiveness.
Giving details about the controversial arrest, Nishad said: Qureshi was supposed to appear in a local court on March 21 in connection with an old case. His lawyer also had accompanied him to the court. However, Qureshi was picked up by a few policemen from the court premises on the pretext of questioning. Qureshi’s lawyer had brought this to the notice of the judge on the same day through a written statement.
“Police took Qureshi to an undisclosed location and tortured him brutally under the pretext of interrogation. Their intention was to implicate him in unsolved case. No policemen responded to our repeated requests to reveal Qureshi’s whereabouts. On March 26, a policeman contacted me over phone to inform that Quresh was arrested on the same day (March 26) and would be produced before a court on March 27. However, instead of taking him to court, the police produced him before the judge and forced him to give false statement. When police realized that Qureshi’s condition was extremely critical, they took him to Wenlock Hospital, where he was treated as an outpatient and sent back. Through the help of our lawyer finally we managed to get him admitted to Wenlock Hospital for treatment. Later, the court issued an order to shift him to KMC hospital for further treatment,” he said. Qureshi’s father Aboobakar and lawyer Ashraf Agnadi were present at the press meet.
