Mangalore, May 9: Alleging police inaction in recent rape on a minor in Vittla, several members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a protest in front of the office of the Superintendent of Police in Mangalore.
A 14-year-old girl from Vittla was allegedly abducted by two persons and repeatedly raped in an isolated spot in Madikeri on April 18.
According to the complaint registered at Vitla Police Station by the victim, one of the accused later took her to his father-in-law's house and again sexually assaulted her. However, even three weeks after the incident, no arrests were made by the police.
The protesters said that police are deliberately trying to cover up the case for unknown reasons. “A minor girl was raped three weeks ago. But police have made no effort to arrest the accused who are wandering freely,” said one of the protesters.
The protestors also forwarded a memorandum to Home Minister K.J. George, warning of more protests if action is not taken. The memorandum demanded that all the accused should be immediately arrested.
