Mangaluru, Jan 15: The Karnataka state government has made all arrangements to administer polio vaccine to 74.25 lakh children aged less than five on January 17 from 8am to 5pm.
Announcing this at a press meet here on Friday, UT Khader, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, urged that children below five years be given polio drops compulsorily even if the vaccine is given to them in the previous drives.
He said that his department has identified more than 29,000 sensitive areas including dwellings of migrant labourers and construction workers in the state.
He said as many as 32,617 booths will be set up and 1,03,464 vaccinators will be deployed to administer polio drops to all children below five years across the state.
While 51,732 teams of health workers have been formed to carry out the drive, 6,522 supervisors will monitor the process. To make the drive more effective, 1,205 mobile teams and 1,736 transit teams have been formed, Khader said.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah will launch the Pulse Polio Drive in Bengaluru on January 17, he said. "Though the nation has been officially declared as the 'polio-free' nation by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2014, we need to be cautious about its recurrence.
In Karnataka, no polio cases have been reported after 2007. However, since police cases are reported in neighbouring countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan, we need to take precautions," Khader said and appealed people to bring all children below five years compulsorily to administer polio drops.
