Kolkata, Aug 18: In what could be termed as a premature blast, a heavy explosion at an apartment owned by a BJP leader near Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport area on the outskirts of the city claimed the life of a man and seriously injured another.
Even though the incident took place on Independence Day, it was not reported by the mainstream media. Hours before this blast, Kolkata police had recovered 22 bag raw materials of explosives from a Godown at Barabazar area including 500 kg Sulphur, 600 kg Ammonium Nitrate etc.
It is learned bombs were being made on the first floor of a two-storied building at Dumdum Motilal Colony near the Gate No. 2 of the Airport.
Local BJP leader Manik Das Baidya, who owns the apartment, has been arrested by the police along with his two sons. Baidya had twice contested the municipal election on BJP ticket.
The local residents, who witnessed Saturday’s explosion, informed the Barackpur Police Commissionarate. The police rushed to the spot with dog squad and found two people seriously injured.
Both of the injured were first taken to Dumdum Municipal Hospital, and then rushed to the R G Kar Hospital. However, among them, 28-year-old Balai Dey was declared brought dead. Another injured, identified as Sudip Dev has been admitted to the intensive care unit.
Barrackpur Police Commissioner Niraj Kumar Singh revealed on Saturday that cops have also recovered six unused bombs, a couple of mobile phones and other materials from the place of explosion.
