Mangaluru, Apr 17: In a shocking incident, a Class 3 student was brutally beaten up by a priest of a church for failing to recite hymns at Peruvai near Vittla on the outskirts of the city.

On Friday a team from Childline led by Renni D'Souza visited the church and met the child. They found wounds on the back, hands and legs of the child.
The injured child revealed that he was scolded and hit with a stick by the priest after he failed to repeat the hymns.
Mr. D'Souza said that the Childline personnel's attempts to meet the priest failed.
He said, though the parents were angry with the conduct of the priest, they did not file any compliant following pressure from the community members.
A report about the incident will be placed before the District Child Protection Unit, he said.
The Childline personnel are also expected to meet the Mangaluru Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza and express the need to create a child-friendly atmosphere in churches.
