Mangaluru, Jul 26: Dalit activist S P Anand raised the issue of lack of employee benefits and security measures for youth from the SC/ST community working at Mangaluru Central railway station in the city.

Speaking at the monthly SC/ST grievance meeting at the office of Police Commissioner, Mangaluru City here on Sunday, he said that about 20-30 Dalit youth employed by the railway department at Mangaluru Central railway station were deprived of their employee benefits such as ESI card and providence fund (PF). Apart from these benefits, the female staff are also deprived of an appropriate restroom denying them privacy to change into their work-wear, he pointed out.
Eve-teasing
He alleged that the female staff from the community underwent eve-teasing and attempts to being waylaid by random miscreants loitering near the railway station in Pandeshwar police station limits, while returning to their houses after dark. Efforts should be made to reduce the working hours of the youth so that they can return home before the last mode of public transport departs. The youth should also be provided their employee benefits by the railway department, he urged.
Mr Anand also alleged that a person named Uday Kumar was involved in preparing homemade snacks as a private enterprise in his home without a permit, causing pollution and foul smell to emanate from his home. This has been causing a problem to the local residents in the nearby Dalit colony in Urwa police station limits, he said, adding that the enterprise continued to run despite issuance of a notice by Mangaluru City Corporation.
DCP (Law & Order) Shantharaju said that he would take cognisance of the complaints and issue directives to take appropriate legal action in both the cases.
Another representative Jinnappa Bangera said that money lenders continued to harass and trouble the borrowers despite several raids being conducted to curb the illegal practice. Despite this, several money lenders have continued to operate in the police commissionerate limits. The police should take suo moto action against them in the absence of complaints from the victims, he urged.
Mr Shantharaju said that the police department had booked a total of 12 cases against money lenders, some of which had been registered suo moto. Appropriate legal action will be taken after conducting investigation, he said in the meeting.
