Mangaluru, Jul 13: The activists of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Democratic Youth Federation of India on Monday staged a protest demanding the Mangaluru City Corporation speed up the work on approach road to facilitate the commissioning of road under bridge (RuB) newly constructed in lieu of level crossing on Padil-Bajal road.

Even though the Southern Railway has completed the RUB, its commissioning was delayed after the MCC decided to deviate from the original plan for the approach roads so as to avoid acquisition of private properties. While the approach roads as originally envisaged by the Railways required acquisition of small portions of private property, the MCC wanted the roads on railway property itself.
The agitators who gathered at the spot shouted slogans against MCC holding it responsible for the delay in commissioning RUB, which was supposed to be completed by February 2015. Then Railway Minister D V Sadananda Gowda had laid foundation stone for the project on August 16, 2014.
Addressing the protesters, CPM leader Sunil Kumar Bajal said that even after the Railways has okayed the drawings for the revised approach road plan, the negligence of MCC has stalled the work.
He said local residents and motorists are facing hardship as the Padil-Bajal road was closed to facilitate the work on RUB since last October. “They have to use the longer distance route to reach the place in case of an emergency. The residents have to walk to reach the main road,” he said slamming MCC for causing inconvenience for the residents by not completing approach road on time.
The RuB is a decade-old demand of the residents of Faisalnagar, Veernagar, Vijaynagar, Bajal and Jalligudde. Since the Mangalore Junction Railway Station is on the busy Mumbai line, the gates of the level crossing close very frequently, affecting movement of vehicles.
