Mangaluru, Jun 5: The Puttur Town Police have arrested 64-year-old Tangaraj of Kasaragod in Kerala in connection with seven cases of theft reported in Puttur town this year. They have recovered gold ornaments, silver articles and other articles valued at Rs. 7 lakh, reportedly stolen from houses in the town.
Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Bhushan Gulabrao Borase told media here on Sunday that the peculiar aspect of Tangaraj's modus operandi was that he burgled houses on Saturdays when residents left for weekend visits to other places. “Theft was reported in seven houses in Puttur this year. All these thefts happened during the day time on Saturdays,” he said.
Following these thefts, Mr. Borase said that patrolling heightened in Puttur on Saturdays since the last few days. During patrol duty on May 20, Puttur City Police Inspector Mahesh Prasad and his team apprehended Tangaraj, who was found moving suspiciously on the Puttur Bypass Road. During questioning, Tangaraj admitted to breaking open locked houses and stealing articles from them, he added.
Mr. Borase said that while Tangaraj largely succeeded in stealing articles from most of the houses, he returned empty handed from two houses as the occupants had kept jewellery in bank lockers. The burglar entered only those houses where newspapers were seen at the main door, main gate being locked and room lights being on during the day. He used a crow bar to break open the doors and go in to loot the houses. Tangaraj is involved in 28 cases of theft in Udupi, 10 in Palakkad, seven in Puttur and one in Kushalnagar, he said.
Mr. Borase said that an Assistant Sub Inspector of Police has been asked to visit police stations in Udupi, Kushalnagar, Palakkad and take steps for cancellation of bail that Tangaraj has obtained. Action will also be taken against those standing surety for Tangaraj's bail.
