Mangaluru, Jun 21: Dakshina Kannada district police have caught and apprehended a person in a case of sexual assault on a minor girl in Kadaba police station limits in Puttur taluk on Sunday.
A 16-year-old girl, studying in Class 9 in a government school in Uppinangady, was allegedly raped by an unidentified person near Koyla farm while she was walking home alone from school on Saturday afternoon.

The police have arrested Shekhar K, aged 30, son of Podiya Nalke, resident of Koyla village in the same taluk.
Briefing mediapersons at a press conference on Sunday, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police S P Sharanappa said that the minor girl belonged to Scheduled Caste and was able to provide detailed description of the accused to the police that helped them pinpoint and apprehend the accused.
Based on clinching clues in the description of the accused provided by the victim such as lean build, curly hair, beard, stained teeth and other details such as red lungi, black chappals and black mobile owned by the accused, the police team operated swiftly and was able to arrest the accused within a period of 24 hours of the sexual abuse, he said.
He said that the medical examination was conducted on the girl on Saturday. The accused confessed to have known of her daily routine and followed her on the way home on Saturday afternoon since the girl was walking unaccompanied.
The accused is a first-time offender and worked as a coolie labourer, he said, adding that the girl would be given counselling by the Child Welfare Committee.
A case has been registered under the POCSO Act and other sections of the IPC.
