Kalaburagi, Sept 20: Qamarul Islam, the former Minister and senior Congress leader, who died at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Monday, was buried with full State honours at Khalender Khan burial ground in Anand Nagar here on Tuesday evening.
The last rites were performed by his adopted son Farazul Islam as per the Islamic traditions after offering Zanazah-ki-Namaaz (funeral prayers) at the KCT Engineering College grounds here. The State Reserve Police gave a gun salute to Qamarul Islam before the funeral in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha M. Mallikarjun Kharge, All-India Congress Committee general secretary and party’s Karnataka in-charge K.C. Venugopal, Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, and party workers. Thousands of people from Kalaburagi and neighbouring districts paid their last respects to Qamarul Islam.
The body of Qamarul Islam was shifted to Kalaburagi by road on Tuesday morning. The cortège was kept at his residence in Bengaluru on Monday before shifting it to his home town. The cortège was taken in a procession from Jeelanabad, Aland checkpost, to reach the KCT Engineering College grounds, where the body was kept for public viewing from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Hundreds of people gathered en route to catch a last glimpse of the body wrapped in the Tricolour.
Educational institutions and government offices declared a holiday. Most of the localities wore a deserted look as commercial establishments voluntarily closed down their shutters and vehicular movement was restricted on various roads.
