Mangalore, Mar 28: South Canara District Central Cooperative (SCDCC) bank president M N Rajendra Kumar expressed firm confidence that the Congress Lok Sabha candidates from the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi would emerge victorious in the elections, as there were a lot of favourable points in favour of the party.

Addressing mediapersons on Friday as the newly-appointed president of Congress publicity committee for the twin districts, he said that chief minister Siddaramaiah had worked for the welfare of farmers and aided the growth of animal husbandry in the state.

During the previous Lok Sabha elections, the BJP government was in power in the state; but now it is the Congress government. Moreover, in the last state assembly elections, seven out of eight MLA seats were bagged by Congress candidates in Dakshina Kannada, he said, that these were favourable conditions that would pave way for Congress 's win in both Lok Sabha constituencies.

He further said that the Congress government was a ray of hope which had introduced several farmer-friendly schemes in the state.

He also claimed that the BJP government had failed to revive the sugar factory in Brahmavar in Udupi district when it was in power under former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa. Even in Udupi, Congress is facing no problems and will win from Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency in all likelihood, he said.

As the publicity committee president, he said that publicity for the party would be done through media and television channels as well as meetings in rural areas.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
