Mangaluru, Apr 27: He had never imagined that he could campaign for the Congress party for the May 12 Karnataka assembly polls. The octogenarian, however, stole the show when the Congress supremo Rahul Gandhi visited Mangaluru to release the party’s poll manifesto today.
Rahul, who released the manifesto at TMA Pai Auditorium in the city, handed over the first copy to Janardhana Poojary though Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, KPCC president Dr G Parameshwara and state in-charge K C Venugopal were right next to him.
Moved by the respect shown by Rahul, the former union minister, in spite of his ill health tried to raise slogans and encouraged other leaders on the stage.
Though his doctors have advised him to take rest at home, Poojary decided to go to Bantwal too to campaign for the party and he received hero’s welcome there. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had to stop his speech for a few minutes when thousands of fans of Poojary started raising slogans seeing the latter stepping towards the stage.
Rahul himself came forward to welcome Poojary and made the latter sit right next to the former. After Rahul showed his reverence for Poojary in public, many senior Congress leaders touched the octogenarian’s feet and sought his blessings.
It’s worth mentioning here that Poojary had served as the Union Minister of State for Finance in the cabinet of Rahul’s father Rajiv Gandhi and grandmother Indira Gandhi.
