Mangaluru, May 3: Ramakrishna Mission carried out Swachh Mangaluru for Swachh Bharath - cleanliness drive on 14th consecutive Sunday at Nandigudda area in the city. Katyayini, president of BJP Mahila Morcha and Nakre Surendra Shetty, in the presence of Swami Jitakamanandaji of Ramakrishna Mangaluru inaugurated the drive. Ganesh Karnik, MLC, NSS coordinator Vineetha Rai, social activist Suresh Shetty and other eminent persons were present.
Students of Ramakrishna Mission Balakashrama and other devotees and well-wishers of the ission took an active part in the drive along with pourakarmikas of Mangaluru City Corporation. The drive began at Koti Chanayya Circle and from there proceeded towards Marnamikatta through Nandigudda and Shantinagar bus stands. Students of the Mission, under the leadership of swamiji and Karnik cleared the garbage by picking the pieces of paper and plastic.
They also distributed handbills among the residents and public there. Ramakrishna Mission is also renovating and improving basic public amenities under this drive. As part of this initiative, the volunteers washed and cleaned Nandigudda and Shantinagar bus shelters and painted giving them a new look. The dilapidated platform near the peepal tree there was repaired and renovated thus enhancing beauty of the place. MRPL, principal patron of this initiative supported this drive.
This is a part of the 40 weeks cleanliness drive organized by the Ramakrishna Mission and initiated on the February 1, Atmarupachaitanya, coordinator said. Move by the mission volunteers to clean the area in and around the city corporation's main office at Lalbagh on Sunday last had echoed in the monthly meeting of the council held on April 28 with corporators cutting across party lines lambasting the officials for their apathy in keeping the corporation office area clean.
