Mangalore, Jun 9: Raviraj Hegde Kodavoor was re-elected unopposed as the president of Dakshina Kannada co-operative Milk Producers Union Ltd (DKMUL) for the third term at Mangalore Dairy premises at Kulshekar on Monday.
Along with president Raviraj Hegde, 15 other directors of the DKMUL were elected for a period of five years in the elections.
District Officer of Backward Classes Welfare Department and Returning Officer A C Renuka Prasad said that the term of the present governing body would come to an end in the last week of June.
Speaking at a press conference after being re-elected, president Raviraj Hegde said that the Union would set up a unit for producing flexi-packed milk ' in an ongoing Rs 32-crore project at Kulshekar diary in Mangalore. The unit will produce around 60,000 packets per day. It will be fully functional in a year, he said, adding that there was more pressure to produce dairy products like curds and lassi at Kulshekar diary to supply it to consumers in Udupi.
He also announced plans of coming up with a fully-fledged sophisticated dairy unit at Uppoor in Udupi taluk with a larger handling capacity of milk. The dairy currently functioning at Manipal will be shifted to Uppoor in a project at a cost of Rs 35 crores, which will be undertaken after the completion of the flexi-pack project, he said.
He added that after shifting the diary at Manipal to Uppoor, the existing unit at Manipal could be utilised for producing ice cream and other products to cater to the local market.
Managing director of the union B V Sathyanarayana was present on the occasion.
Presidents of 639 milk unions from Mangalore, Puttur and Kundapur sub divisions had taken part in the elections that were held on May 26 in Kulshekar.
