Bangalore, May 23: The Students' Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) has called upon the Muslim community to form a coordination committee to look upon the ways to reassess, reform and refresh madrasa system.
The SIO Karnataka Zone recently released the findings of a year-long survey conducted by the organisation on 29 residential madrasas offering education up to the graduation level.
Addressing the media persons Thouseef Ahmed M.Y., SIO zonal president said, the syllabus has not evolved to adapt to opportunities and challenges in a plural society like India. “A majority of the students who pass out from madrasas are aloof from the mainstream,” he said.
Four of the 29 madrasas surveyed were described as model madrasas'. These are Ziya-ul-uloom, Kandloor; Jamiya Islamiya, Bhatkal; Jamia-baithul-uloom, Sindgi and Houziya Ilmiya Bhakirul Uloom, Chickballapur.
Mr. Ahmed said a collective effort from the Muslim community is needed to improve the system.
Earlier while releasing the report eminent educationist Dr. Niranjan Aradhya lauded the efforts and stressed the need for starting of reforms within the community in this regard.
Muttehida Mahaz secretary S.M.Iqbal, Majlis-ul-Ulema convenor Maulana Waheeduddin Khan Umri, SIO secretary Saeed Kotwal and others were present.
