Bangalore, Mar 13: There existed ambiguity in the BJP house with the recommendation of second list of candidates for Lok Sabha elections.

The State election committee, which met in Bangalore on Wednesday to finalise candidates for eight Lok Sabha constituencies, recommended the candidature of Sriramulu and has proposed his candidature from Bellary (reserved) constituency.

“The party bosses in New Delhi will decide on the merger in a couple of days,” state BJP unit chief Prahlad Joshi said.

Ignoring Sushma Swaraj 's opposition to Sriramulu 's induction into the party state leaders feel the party should either admit the Bellary strongman into the party or forge an electoral alliance with his BSR Congress.

The party's state election committee, which met here on Wednesday to decide on candidates for the remaining eight constituencies,

Sushma Swaraj, a one-time godmother of the Bellary Reddy brothers, has vehemently opposed Sriramulu's re-entry. BJP president Rajnath Singh reached out to BJP patriarch LK Advani to resolve the crisis saying that Sriramulu, who belongs to the Schedueld Tribe (ST) Nayaka community, wields influence in Bellary, Koppal, Raichur, Gadag and Chitradurga districts and can get a large number of votes. Singh reportedly said there's no case against Sriramulu and cannot be considered tainted.

Tumkur is a still bone of contention

Yeddyurappa had insisted that his loyalist and sitting?MP?G?S?Basavaraj be allowed to re-contest from Tumkur. A majority of the party leaders are against Basavaraj for his alleged anti-party activities. A final decision will be taken at the party 's central election committee meeting in New Delhi on Thursday. If winning ability was the only factor, then Yeddyurappa may succeed in getting Basavaraj the ticket.

In Mysore

The party has recommended journalist Pratap Simha for Mysore, though he had sought ticket from Udupi-Chikmagalur. Simha works with a Kannada daily in Bangalore and is known for his pro-Hindu stance. He is from Hassan. By fielding Simha, the party is planning to polarise the Vokkaliga and pro-Narendra Modi votes in the constituency.

Vijayashankar to take on H D Deve Gowda in Hassan

Simha 's candidature from Mysore is likely to upset Vijayashankar, who had represented Mysore two times in Parliament. Vijayashankar was keen that he be allowed to contest from Mysore.

Sources close to Vijayashankar said he was least interested in contesting from Hassan. However, the BJP thinks that Vijayashankar, being a Kuruba, would be able to garner his community 's votes. The Lingayats would stand by the BJP. These two factors may help in fighting Deve Gowda.

In Mandya and Kolar

The committee also recommended former Pollution Control Board chairman B?Shivalingaiah from Mandya and former legislator Bethamangala Narayanaswamy from Kolar. MLC?Veeraiah too was aiming for the Kolar seat. The BJP has already announced candidates for 20 constituencies.

Opposition for Shobha

Party sources said it was at the instance of former chief minister B?S?Yeddyurappa that the name of Karandlaje was finalised for Udupi-Chikmagalur. Chikmagalur MLA?C?T?Ravi had strongly opposed her candidature. However, on Wednesday, he backed out. Karandlaje, a Vokkaliga, has some base in the constituency as she started her political career from Puttur, which comes under the Udupi-Chikmagalur segment.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
