Mudigere, Jun 26: While conducting an inspection of vehicles, Mudigere police seized a sum of Rs 1.33 crore being carried in two cars without relevant records from Mangaluru to Chikkamagaluru on Villupuram-Mangaluru national highway, on Thursday morning.

The police team consisted of PSI Gaviraj, ASI Somegowda, personnel Umesh, Vijaykumar, Ravindra and home guard personnel Krishna. While checking the two cars, the police team found a box filled with currency notes in each car. It is said that a third car containing a similar box had managed to evade attention from the police.
Upon counting the currency notes found in the two cars with bank counting machines, the total sum was found to be Rs 1.33 crore. The police have conducted interrogation of two persons found driving the cars, including owner of Sigekhan Estate near Muthodi Ivan Texre.
Speaking to reporters, Income tax officer R Narayan Iyer said that it was confirmed during preliminary investigation that no income tax had been paid for the amount seized by the police. The accused have claimed that the money was procured by selling agricultural produce from the estate, he said.
Additional SP Sanjeev Patil said that the amount had been seized at 10.30 a.m. on Thursday from two cars plying from Mangaluru towards Chikkamgaluru at Mudigere Hand-post. It is found that the money belongs to the owner of an estate in Mallandur police station limits. In the two boxes that were detected in the cars, one box contained Rs 80 lakh while the other contained a sum of Rs 53 lakh, totalling to Rs 1.33 crore, he informed.
He said that a case had been registered, and the accused were remanded to judicial custody. Additional information will be obtained after a thorough investigation into the source of money, he said.
