Udupi, Jun 15: A Rs. 24-crore proposal has been submitted to the State government for the construction of permanent sea walls in Udupi district, revealed Urban Development and Udupi district in charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake.
Speaking to media persons after visiting areas affected by sea erosion at Kaup near here that Rs. 13 crore had been sanctioned by the State government including Rs. 10 crore for Kaup Assembly constituency.
He said that all ministers from the coastal districts had urged Minister for Ports Baburao Chinchansur to take necessary action to prevent sea erosion, which is intensifying in the region. Mr. Chinchansur has directed the Deputy Commissioners to put boulders in areas affected by sea erosion as a temporary measure to save houses. The chances of erosion were high during Full Moon,” he said.
The sea erosion, which used to affect Yermal village earlier had stopped after the removal of a breakwater there. But, incidents of sea erosion were being reported in new places. A temporary sea wall had been constructed at Kaup-Thottam about two decades ago. But it had given away a few days ago.
There were only two ways of responding to the problem of sea erosion. One was the construction of temporary sea walls to combat immediate problem of sea erosion. Another was the construction of permanent sea walls as a long term and lasting solution.
“Boulders will be put in the areas affected by sea-erosion in the district including Kaup-Thottam as a temporary measure from Sunday. By doing so, we will try to protect the houses and coconut plantations of the people,” he said.
T.S. Rathod, Executive Engineer, Department of Ports and Fisheries, said that sea erosion had affected 100 metres of land each at Shiroor-Kalihithlu and Gangolli light house, 50 metres in Malpe, and 200 metres at Kaup-Thottam. A committee under the Assistant Commissioner visited areas affected by sea erosion and took decisions on where works should be started immediately, he said.
