Mangaluru, Jul 23: A businessman was left poorer by Rs 8.5 lakh within a second as a thief stole the bag containing cash from his car on Balmatta road after diverting his attention. Tuesday’s incident is the second such incident in a fortnight.

The police said Aziz and his wife Ansara Begum went towards Balmatta Road where they stopped the vehicle near Syndicate Bank’s branch. Aziz’s wife got out of the car and went to the Syndicate Bank to query about her debit card.
As Aziz was waiting in the car, a person came near the car and banged the windshield and showed some currency notes that had fallen near the car. A few minutes later another person also came and pointed towards three Rs. 10 notes that had fallen at the rear end of the car. Aziz came out of the car and picked up the three currency notes.
When he returned, Aziz saw the bag containing cash missing. This is the second such incident reported in the last 15 days. On July 6, the attention of Adid Ansar was diverted and Rs. 50,000 kept on the rear seat of his car stolen, at Nellikai Road.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Central) K. Tilakchandra suspected the involvement of a three-member gang in these thefts. He has asked people to exercise caution while carrying heavy amount of cash in their vehicles. A case has been registered at Mangaluru North Police Station and investigations are on.
