Mangalore, Mar 22: Alleging certain irregularities in the functioning of Mangalore Electrical Supply Company (MESCOM) and embezzlement of money by few of its employees, a local activist has obtained and furnished necessary documents correlating to the allegations through RTI Act.
He provided documents to show that MESCOM had erected unauthorised high-transmission towers on the rooftops and terraces of residential buildings in the city without prior permission from the Karnataka Electrical Board (KEB). In a certain instance, around four or five towers have been erected on the same building by MESCOM, he claimed.
Mescom working with KMC, alleges activist
Mr Haneef also alleged that the unauthorised electricity connection at KMC Hospital in Attavar continued to supply power to other structures in the premises without authorisation. Despite a penalty of Rs 3.40 crore slapped on KMC, the institution has continued to use electricity through the illegal connection, without even paying the penalty. The Mescom and KMC may have come to an understanding between them, due to which the penalty amount has been reduced to Rs 2.10 crore from the original fine imposed, he said.
He added that the penalty amount should have been paid to Mescom by KMC within a month, but had not done so.
After a raid was conducted on Manipal College of Dental Sciences, situated adjacent the hospital building, on December 9, 2013, the Mescom Vigilance department had imposed a penalty of approximately Rs 3.40 crore on the establishment for supplying electricity to adjacent structures without an authorised electricity connection.
Another allegation on the electricity company Mescom is irregularities in the promotion of non-qualified staff in the company for technical jobs.
