Bangalore, Sep 6: Union Railway Minister D V Sadananda Gowda's son Karthik, who has been accused by a Kannada actress of rape and cheating, has not responded to the notice issued by the police and has therefore, been taken to be absconding said Bangalore Police Commissioner MN Reddi.

"It is open to a court to give orders to the police to arrest on a non-bailable warrant. We gave Karthik Gowda two notices, but he hasn't responded to either, so we are treating him as an absconder," said Reddi.

A Bangalore court has issued an arrest warrant against Karthik Gowda over the accusations made against him.

Police teams from Bangalore are in Kodagu and Mangalore to hunt for Karthik, who is yet to appear before court despite an arrest warrant against him. The teams visited the houses of railway minister Sadananda Gowda's relatives in Kushalnagar and Karthik's fiancee's home at Guddehosur.

Earlier, Karthik had moved the city sessions court for anticipatory bail in the case and the court had adjourned the case for further hearing to September 4.

The Kannada actress had claimed that she had married Karthik on June 5 after meeting him on May 8.

While Karthik Gowda got engaged to another woman in Kushalnagar, Kodagu, his father Sadananda Gowda rejected the allegations against his son, alleging a conspiracy.

Gowda said that he was shocked to see that report and added that his personal and public life was an open book.

He had also said that it seemed suspicious that the woman had filed the complaint hours after his son Karthik's engagement.

Bail plea verdict likely today

A city civil and sessions court posted Karthik Gowda's anticipatory bail petition for orders to Saturday. The son of railway minister DV Sadananda Gowda is accused of kidnapping, marrying by force and raping a Kannada actress.

The actress and her sister were present in the jam-packed court hall No 54 on Friday as public prosecutor S M Hiremani submitted his nine-page objections to granting anticipatory bail to Karthik.

The prosecutor said the accused is an influential person and has been evading several summons from investigating police. He submitted bills from the hotels and bars Karthik and the girl had visited together, as also audio recordings of their conversations. The prosecutor told the court that it's not possible to get CCTV images as hotels keep them only for 25 days in their server.

Defence lawyer, former advocate general BV Acharya, argued that there was a four-day gap between the travel dates of Karthik and the actress to Mangalore. There was no proof that Karthik had threatened her at gun-point, he told the court. Further, her statement that Karthik was her husband makes it clear there cannot be a case of rape.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
