Honnavar, Mar 9: A group of miscreants belonging to saffron groups waylaid a vehicle transporting cattle and assaulted two persons at Honnavar in Uttara Kannada district on Wednesday night.
The Honnavar police have so far arrested four persons allegedly involved in the attack.
Superintendent of Police Vinayak Patil said that Noorul Amin, 40, and Guran Pote, 35, were transporting eight heads of cattle from Ankola to Bhatkal. According to a complaint filed by the assault victims, a group tried stopping the vehicle in Kumta.
When the vehicle went, the group followed them and reportedly waylaid the vehicle at Honnavar around 11 p.m. They allegedly pulled out Noorul Amin and Pote and assaulted them and also damaged the vehicle.
Mr Patil said the victims have told police that there were about 100 persons in the group. The police have registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code and arrested Subraya Gowda, Bablu Gowda, Uday Mesta and Balu Mesta.
Mr. Patil said a separate case was registered against two assault victims and also a Bhatkal resident for alleged illegal transport of cattle under the provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
