Mangalore, May 12: Urging that the state Congress government led by Siddaramaiah should be dismissed for its “unconstitutional administration” in Karnataka, a mass protest meeting was jointly organised by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and like-minded saffron groups in front of the deputy commissioner's office in the city on Monday.

Addressing the protestors at the public meeting, state convenor of Bajrang Dal Surya Narayana said that the Congress party had become a cancer to the entire country, which was trying to cast away all the saffron groups in the state. The Congress government in Karnataka is following anti-Hindu policies such as withdrawal of anti-cow slaughter bill and encouraging illegal cattle trafficking in the state. Hindus are being treated as third-class citizens, while Muslims are favoured by the government. It is unconstitutional to make laws and bring in schemes which are biased to one particular religion, he said.

He said that the Congress government was providing grants to Muslims for Hajj pilgrimage, while also providing funds for Muslim families under Shaadi Bhagya, while there are poor families belonging to other religions.

He also blamed the Congress government for conducting assaults on Hindutva leaders and booking members of saffron groups under false cases. He also alleged bias by the government in providing compensation to victims of accidents or calamities belonging to the Muslim community.

Dakshina Kannada is a district known for its communal harmony, and if the harmony should remain intact, all the anti-Hindu policies of the state government should be revoked, he said, adding that the members of the Hindu society should work towards putting a halt on love jihad' in the state.

Speaking on the occasion, VHP member Jitendra Kottari warned the government of intense revolt if it failed to take necessary action against the anti-Hindu policies in the state.

He demanded that the anti cow-slaughter bill should be immediately implemented in the state and lashed out at the state government for declaring Rs 10 lakhs as compensation to Kabeer who was killed in an encounter while he was transporting cattle.

VHP leaders M B Puranik and Jagadish Shenava, Hindu Jagrana Vedike leader Satyajit Suratkal, Bajrang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, BJP leader Nagesh Shetty and others took part in the protest meeting.

Prior to the meeting, a mass protest rally was undertaken from Ambedkar Circle to deputy commissioner's office by the demonstrators.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.
