Mangalore, Aug 23: Educational scholarships were distributed to a total of 24 Muslim students from a poor financial background in a programme organised by Social - Educational Welfare Association (SEWA) under the aegis of South Kanara Muslim Welfare Association, Muscat, in Mangalore on Saturday.
Speaking at the programme, founder of B A Thumbay Group B Ahmed Haji Moideen said that knowledge was one of the basics of religion. “Education is a debt we take from our future generation and need to repay it to them. Knowledge is like a responsibility; seek knowledge for a greater cause,” he advised the students.
Stressing on education for the upliftment of the backward families, he said that the habit of reading should be introduced and inculcated in children and developed as they grow. He called on the community to take the gift of education forward.
Minority leader K S Mohammed Masood encouraged the children to follow the path of Deen' along with their academic education. Along with gaining knowledge, learning about the Islamic way of living is also necessary, he said.
Scholar Sharafuddin shed light on the importance of education in Islam and the spread of education in the Islamic world.
The scholarships were distributed to deserving students from the Muslim community from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts to help them pursue their degree and diploma courses.
Dignitaries such as Mohammed Beary, founder-president Shaikh Umar, former president Akbar and several others were present.
