Bengaluru, Jul 24: Member of Parliament Jairam Ramesh on Sunday called for the abolition of Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna awards stating that these create confusion and raise debates on who ought to be selected for the awards.

He was speaking at a media interaction on the sidelines of the conference. “They (the awards) tend to create more problems than they solve. I believe we are better off not giving these because work itself is the greatest reward. Musicians, sportsmen and activists should be honoured. But for politicians, public service is its own reward.”
Speaking about the current political scenario, he said the RSS and BJP are trying to “hijack” Dr Ambedkar like they hijacked Gandhi for political gains. “There is complete hypocrisy on the part of RSS and Modi. They are systematically weakening all parliamentary institutions.”
