Mangalore, May 23: Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader said that the screening process for arriving passengers from the Middle Eastern countries for the viral respiratory illness MERS at Bangalore International Airport and Mangalore International airport from Saturday.
Speaking to mediapersons at a press conference here on Friday, he said that the screening of passengers was part of the precautionary measures issued by the Union Ministry of Health to keep the disease from spreading to people in the state. As per the International Health Regulations laid down by the World Health Organisation, it is not mandatory to screen every patient, but passengers having flu-like symptoms will be screened at the airport, which will be followed up with regular check-ups, he said.
He said that ten secluded beds had been reserved for suspected MERS patients at the District Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore. The respiratory syndrome will be taken seriously as H1N1 disease, he added.
Commencement of seawall to check sea erosion
Speaking on the sea erosion project coming up along the coastline of Dakshina Kannada, the minister said that the construction work on the breakwaters and seawall along the Kotepura-Mogaveerapatna-Qilirinagar coast to check soil erosion from the sea had commenced at a cost of Rs 290 crore. An additional sum of Rs 26 crore in the second phase will be released for the seawall along Someshwara-Uchila coast to provide a permanent solution to the sea erosion which has begun in recent times, he said.
