Mangaluru, Jun 2: The Social Democratic Party of India leaders in Dakshina Kananda have accused the Congress workers of indulging in political goondaism and attacking SDPI activists during recent gram panchayat elections in the district.
Addressing a press conference in the city on Monday, A M Athaullah, district vice-president of SDPI, said that Congress is scared of losing many seats to SDPI-backed candidates in the coastal district.
He said that as many as 274 SDPI-backed candidates are in the fray across the district and all of them are confident of winning. This is a major blow for the Congress. Hence Congress workers tried to threaten SDPI activists by attacking them during election, he alleged.
He said that in Ariadka, Puttur, the Congress workers attacked SDPI activists for complaining to returning officer against them for their interference in the voting process.
Mr Athaullah said that Puttur Congress activist Hemanath Shetty had issued death threat to SDPI workers for campaigning against his brother, who is contesting the polls.
He accused the Congress workers of forcing to withdraw the nomination of Ayesha, an SDPI-backed candidate in Jokatte and giving wrong information to police and officials. “Finally, we had to approach high court to get her nomination accepted,” he said.
He said that in Thumbey gram panchayat limit Congress workers assaulted SDPI activists and then lodged false complaint against them. “They used a dispute between two brothers – an SDPI supporter and a Congress supporter – for political advantage,” he said.
SDPI state secretary Alphonso Franco, DK district general secretary Nawazulla, secretary Anwar Sadath were present among others.
