Mangaluru, Dec 11: Even though Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai has urged all non-communal organizations irrespective of political and religious to attend his harmony walk, many groups have decided to boycott the event.
On December 12, the apolitical rally would commence at 9 a.m. at Farangipete and culminate at Mani at 5 p.m. The walk titled ‘samarasya nadige souhardateyedege’ will cover about 22 km on NH-75.
Mr Rai, who is leading the harmony walk, had clearly stated that he would not expect the participation of organizations like RSS, BJP, PFI and SDPI. Leftist groups have extended support to the rally.
Meanwhile, Dakshina Kannada unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) has announced that it would stay away from the walk.
Mohammed Kunhi, president of the unit, said that there was no need for taking out any walk now as peace prevailed. “It is an election gimmick by the Congress,” Mr. Kunhi alleged.
Mr. Kunhi said that it should have been the responsibility of the government to strengthen harmony in the district during the past four-and-a-half years.
On the other hand, United Muslim Organization, a group led by disgruntled Congress leader and former Mangaluru Mayor K Ashraf has also decided to stay away from the event.
In a release, Mr Ashraf alleged that the two Cabinet Ministers from Dakshina Kannada have not been responding to the “burning problems” of minorities in the district.
“Atrocities against minorities have been continuing in the district. The two Ministers have failed to provide justice, he added. Hence, none of representatives of United Muslim Organisation would participate in it,” he said.
