Mangaluru, Apr 8: Life was not the same for Laxmi (Name changed) until Tuesday evening when her husband received a call from Dr. Altaf Khan, Consultant Urologist and Transplant surgeon at Yenepoya hospital.

Mr. KV Babu a construction worker hailing from Payyanur in Kerala who had a fall and sustained injury to head was declared brain dead. His family was magnanimous enough to give consent for donation of his organs to the needy.
The zonal coordination committee of Karnataka for transplant (ZCCK) contacted Yenepoya hospital to inform Mrs Laxmi who was registered at Yenepoya hospital to get ready for transplant.
That one call changed life of Laxmi. She was immediately summoned to the Yenepoya Medical College hospital at Deralakatte where transplant surgeons Dr. Mujeeburahiman, Dr. Altaf Khan, Dr. Nishith Dsouza and nephrologist Dr. Santosh Pai explained to the husband of Laxmi about the procedure.
Blood samples were drawn from Laxmi and sent for cross match. As soon as the cross match results were favourably poised the whole of transplant team of Yenepoya Medical College comprising of Dr. Mujeeburahiman, Dr. Altaf Khan, Dr Nishith Dsouza, Anaesthesiologits Dr. Padmanabha Bhat, Dr. Rammurthy and other paramedical staff got into action and one kidney of Mr. Babu was transplanted into Mrs Laxmi on wednesday early morning at 1:30 am.
Laxmi was undergoing dialysis at Yenepoya hospital for the last few months since both her kidneys had stopped functioning. She was under the care of chief nephrologist Dr. Santosh Pai. Dr.Santosh Pai had registered her name for cadaver program after she couldn't find suitable live related donor.
Dr. Altaf Khan, Transplant surgeon and Dr. Santosh Pai, Nephrologist at Yenepoya medical college hospital have told that it was second of this kind at Yenepoya Hospital in two weeks time. Only a few days back a kidney was transplanted from a brain dead donor who had donated his organs in Manipal and was transplanted in Yenepoya Medical college hospital, Mangalore which was first transplant between twin districts.
Mr. Farhaad Yenepoya, Director Finance and research has informed that transplant has become a regular affair at Yenepoya and any chronic kidney disease patients who have no suitable related donors for transplant can get themselves registered with zonal coordination committee for transplant (ZCCK) and dialysed at Yenepoya hospital so that they can avail the facility of cadaver transplant whenever their name is selected by ZCCK.
