Bengaluru, Nov 5: The Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has appointed 10 Congress legislators as parliamentary secretaries, who will enjoy the rank of ministers. The parliamentary secretaries will assist the ministers.

The please-all exercise by the chief minister comes close on the heels of effecting an expansion of the council of ministers. The ministry is full with all the 34 berths being filled up. The parliamentary secretaries will enjoy the status of Cabinet, minister of state or deputy minister rank.

The strength of the ministry, as per the constitutional amendment, in Karnataka has been pegged at 34 (15 per cent of the total strength of the Legislative Assembly). To circumvent this, chief ministers appoint parliamentary and political secretaries, usually sanctioning them minister of state rank. Legal experts argue that the post is not covered under the law. B?S?Yeddyurappa had appointed parliamentary secretaries, when he was chief minister. A notification listing the 10 names, nine MLAs and one MLC, was issued by the Department of parliamentary affairs on Thursday evening. The appointments have been made with the consent of the Congress high command, it is said.

The newly appointed parliamentary secretaries were supposed to be sworn in on Friday, but owing to certain delays, they may be sworn in on Saturday evening. Siddaramaiah himself will administer the oath at the Vidhana Soudha. A parliamentary secretary works under the direction of the minister.

Siddaramaiah has taken into account various factors including caste, community, seniority, gender, while making the appointments. Not only has he chosen youngsters, he has also picked second-time MLAs who did not get the opportunity of being inducted into the Cabinet. It is rumoured that more may be added to the list.

While one legislator belonging to the minority community has been appointed, those from the SC/ST and backward communities too figure in the list. No member from the major community Lingayat has been appointed. Sources said the community members will get large representation to contest the upcoming elections to 25 MLC seats. The MLCs will be elected by local bodies.

The parliamentary secretaries are given salaries and facilities like bungalows, vehicles and TA/DA, on a par with cabinet ministers or ministers of state, as decided by the chief minister. The notification issued on Thursday has not indicated the status.
The appointees are:
*Shakunthala Shetty - Puttur (Bunt)
*C Puttaranga Shetty - Chamarajanagar (Uppara)
*A S Shivalli - Kundagol (Kuruba)
*H P Manjunath - Hunsur (Shetty)
*E Tukaram - Sandur (ST)
*Raju Algur - Nagthana (SC)
*Makbul Bagawan - Vijayapura city (Muslim)
*Umesh Jadhav - Chincholi (SC)

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
