Udupi, Mar 20: BJP candidate for Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency, Shobha Karandlaje, created a flutter by filing her nominations on the very first day on Wednesday. The last date to file the nominations is March 26.
She filed the papers before Deputy Commissioner Dr Muddu Mohan, who is also the returning officer. The whole issue was kept under wraps as Shobha visited the DC Office only with only some of her close associates, including party district president Tingalay Vikramarjuna Hegde, who was informed about the move at the last minute. BJP leaders Mattaru Ratnakar Shetty, Suresh Nayak and former district president Uday Kumar Shetty also accompanied her.
According to the affidavit filed by her, she possesses movable assets worth Rs 5,10,89,452. She owns 1 kg of gold worth Rs 27 lakh, besides 650 gm of gold ornaments. She also has 1.4 kg of silver and 220 gm of silver articles worth Rs 10,000. She owns a Toyota Fortuner of 2010 model worth Rs 12.35 lakh and Toyota Innova of 2013 model worth Rs 13.86 lakh. Shobha has nil value of claims and interests and has given advances and loans up to Rs 3.36 crore to Kapila Manjushree Apparels. She has four LIC insurance policies worth Rs one lakh, Rs 70,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 40,000 each. Besides, she has Birla Sun Life Insurance policies worth Rs 7 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, and a rent deposit of Rs 4 lakh.
Shobha has Rs 1.76 lakh in cash and her deposits in various banks include Rs 4,38,796 lakh in Apex Bank, Rs 4,46,362 lakh in Canara Bank, Rs 75,38,970 in Federal Bank and Rs 6,54,132 lakh in ING Vysya Bank. She also has bonds and shares worth Rs 50,000 in Kapila Manjushree apparels.
Her immovable assets include self-acquired non-agricultural land worth Rs 2.10 crore as per the current market value. Shobha also owns non-agricultural assets comprising a 50x80 sqft site in HSR Layout in Bangalore and 15.5 cents of land in Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district. She does not own any inherited property. She has liabilities comprising loan dues to financial institutions totalling Rs 3,81,19,792 crore.
Others
Twenty one candidates, including Union Minister K H Muniyappa and BJP leader Ananth Kumar, filed their nomination papers, as the ball was set rolling for the April 17 Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka.
Karnataka Electoral officials said 21 candidates including eight independents have filed nominations on Wednesday.
Ananth Kumar, P C Mohan and B M Jayadev Mathad filed their nominations from Bangalore South, Udupi-Chikkmagalur, Bangalore Central and Haveri parliamentary constituencies, respectively.
Muniyappa and Manjunath Bhandary (Cong) filed nominations from Kolar (Reserved) and Shimoga Lok Sabha constituencies, respectively.
Kumar is seeking re-election for the sixth time from Bangalore South, where he is being challenged by former Infosys co-founder and face of "Aadhar" programme, Nandan Nilekani on Congress ticket.
JDS Karnataka unit president A Krishnappa, accompanied by former Prime Minister and party supremo H D Deve Gowda, submitted his nomination papers for the Tumkur Lok Sabha seat.
Speaking to reporters, Kumar said the BJP would win at least 20 of the 28 seats from Karnataka, riding high on the Narendra Modi wave throughout the country.
