Kaup, Nov 26: Confusion broke out in Kote GP premises following the issue of lowering of the national flag which was flying high till about late on Sunday night in the Gram Panchayat premises.

Kote Gram Panchayat President even got into a heated altercation with the Kaup police in this regard. It is alleged that the police had assaulted the GP president, which led to serious episodes later on.

In public space, Kote GP President Prashanth Jathanna and Kaup SI Sunil Nayak resorted into mud slinging, which has become a matter of disgrace to both elected representatives as well as government officials, say the locals.

Incident

Late on Sunday night, Mr Jatanna who came to know that the national flag has not be brought down by the GP officials, came to the premises and resorted to bringing it down.

Meanwhile Mr Nayak who was on patrol at around 11.30 pm spotted Mr Jathanna doing so and questioned Jathanna as to why the flag was left as it is till mid night.

He further said that he would also file a case against the GP for insulting the national flag.

To this, Jathanna said that though the hoisting of the flag and bringing it down was the duty of the GP officials, on their lapse he has come to perform the duty.

Mr Nayak who was raged by the reply turned rude and started rebuking Mr Jathanna. It is said that following a minor altercation, the cop also assaulted the GP President.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the GP premises around mid-night to witness the chaos that had broken between the two.

Meanwhile several people came forward to stage a stir against the highhandedness of the cop and in support of the GP President.

Karkala division ASP Annamalai rushed to the spot and tried to convince the people to handle the situation in peaceful manner.

Meanwhile both Jathanna and Mr Nayak filed separate complaints at Kaup police station.

Demand for action

Mr Jathanna was admitted to the hospital later because of blood pressure variation. He has demanded action against Mr Nayak who not only resorted to using unparliamentary words but also assaulted him in public area.

Mr Jathanna has said that he would resign from the post if action is not taken against the said police official.

CPI's complaint

Mr Nayak too has filed a complaint in which he has stated that the GP and its President have disrespected the national flag and have further posed impediments to a government official from performing his duty.

GP Bundh

GP Okkuta President Deviprasad Shetty has said that if action is not taken against the erring police official then the Okkuta will call for a GP Bundh across the district.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
