Bengaluru, Sep 27: With the Kalasa-Banduri related protests becoming the order of the day, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has begun to blame Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the crisis.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said there could be only two solutions to the dispute - intervention of the prime minister for an “out of the court” settlement or wait for the final award of the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal. “Why is the prime minister hesitating to convene a meeting of chief ministers of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa and find a solution for the dispute ?”,?Siddaramaiah sought to know.
Interestingly, recently Law Minister T?B?Jayachandra had said the tribunal is expected to give its verdict soon. Hence, the government would seek leal advice whether to file an application seeking interim relief at this juncture.
The project seeks to improve drinking water supply to Belagavi, Dharwad and Gadag districts. It entails building barrages across Kalasa and Banduri, two tributaries of the Mahadayi river to divert 7.56 tmc to the Malaprabha river. However, Goa has raised objection, resulting the project not taking of.
Several organisations and seers, especially in Belagavi and Dharwad, have been protesting for the last several weeks demanding for the early execution of the project.
Siddaramaiah said that Modi’s suggestion to a recent all-party delegation that the State Congress and BJP?leaders talk to their respective counterparts in Maharashtra and Goa before the chief ministerial level talks was not practical. The state will also be filing a interim application before the tribunal seeking speedy disposal of the case.
