Varanasi, Jun 17: Vishwesha Teertha Swami, the chief pontiff of Pejawar Mutt, who had earlier strongly justified ‘Ghar Wapsi’, has now openly condemned the controversial campaign launched by Hindutva outfits.
Speaking at the International Conference on Communal Harmony and Nation Building (ICCHN-2015) organised by the Students Islamic Organisation in association with Banaras Hindu University’s Department of Political Science on Tuesday at Varanasi, the seer said forcible conversions were condemnable.
“Followers of any religion have no right to force the followers of any other religion to change their faith,” the seer said while criticising the so called ‘Ghar Wapsi’ campaign.
Inaugurating the event, Prof. Kaushal Kishore Mishra, head of the department, said that the responsibility of academia is not confined to the campus and it should play an active role in peace building.
Dr Inayathullah Subhani, a renowned Islamic scholar, said: “We have not succeeded in materialising our slogan of Vikas and Ekta since the independence thanks to our politicians, who preach something what they do not practice,” he said.
He warned that it was difficult to uphold communal harmony if the misunderstandings among communities were not cleared.
Iqbal Hussain, the president of SIO, Ram Shankar Kathariya, Union Minister of State, HRD, Swamy Sarasvanand Saraswathy and Rev. Fr Dr Thomas also spoke.
