Udupi, Aug 11: Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports Pramod Madhwaraj has assured family members of murdered Saudi businessman Bhaskar Shetty to exert pressure on the home minister to form a special investigation team to probe into the case.

Mr. Madhwaraj said that he would talk to Home Minister G. Parameshwara and the new Superintendent of Police, who would take charge here on Thursday, on the formation of the special team. If it was found that the investigation was still not taking place expeditiously, then it could be handed over to the CID or even the CBI.

He had sent the video-clipping given by the sangha where one of the accused was seen sitting in front of the police van to the Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) to investigate it. Since there were complaints about S.V. Girish, Investigation Officer in the case, he had been replaced with D.P. Suman, Assistant Superintendent of Police.

The demand for the former Superintendent of Police of Udupi district K. Annamalai to head the probe would have to be thought of as he had already been transferred to Chikkamagaluru district.

“We will take action as per law in the matter so that the guilty, however powerful they are, do not go scot-free,” he said.

Earlier, a tearful Gulabi Shetty, mother of Bhaskar Shetty, submitted a memorandum to Mr. Madhwaraj, seeking an impartial and speedy probe into the matter during a meeting organised by the Buntara Sangha at the Ammanni Ramanna Shetty Hall, here. The meeting was called demanding a high-level and impartial probe in the murder case.

Sheela K. Shetty, vice-president of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, said that the way the police had given “royal treatment” to the accused had made them a suspect in the eyes of the people. Public confidence in the case could only be restored if it was handed over either to the CID or the CBI, she said.

Joggu Shetty, relative of Bhaskar Shetty, said that when he had first approached the Manipal police station to inform the police that Bhaskar Shetty was missing, the attitude of the police officers there was casual. It was only after Ms. Gulabi Shetty went and got the complaint registered that the police took it seriously, he said.

Ajit Kumar Rai M., Indrali Jayakar Shetty, Sukumar Shetty, Appanna Hegde, Ravindranath Hegde and other leaders of Buntara Sangha were present.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.
